CHAPTER XIV

Lucas came awake to moonlight.

It was spilling in through holes in the ceiling and a not-quite-closed front door. He sat up and looked around, worried something had gone wrong. Talia and Syl were asleep to his left. To his right, where Clover had been laying, was empty.

He reached out and touched the spot, finding it still warm. He looked again at the door, saw a shadow shift as he heard someone move slightly. She must be standing just beyond the door, and must have just gotten up.

For a moment, he wasn’t sure what to do.

It was likely she just wanted some alone time, but it was also possible she’d heard something and was checking it out. If that was the case, though, wouldn’t she have woken him? He supposed he didn’t know her well enough yet to be sure either way.

Lucas got up carefully and pulled his undershorts on, then moved up to the door. He moved quietly enough that if there was someone or something out there, they shouldn’t hear, but not so quietly that he’d sneak up on Clover.

He got to the door and opened it, finding her standing in the moonlight wearing his traveling shirt and nothing else. She looked back at him as he stepped out with her.

“Did I wake you? I didn’t mean to,” she said.

“I’m a light sleeper,” he replied. “You all right?”

“I think so.”

He stood with her in front of the windmill for a moment. It was getting colder at night now and there was a faint chill on the air. In another couple of weeks, the faint chill would grow some teeth. The landscape looked ominously beautiful, painted in the pale moonlight.

“I wanted to ask you how you were doing with regards to...everything you came home to. It’s been kind of nonstop since you got back, and this is a lot to return to. Sorry I didn’t ask sooner,” he said.

“I appreciate it, but it’s not your responsibility,” Clover murmured.

“Isn’t it? Are you not my tribemate? Am I not your chieftain?” he replied.

She looked up at him in silence for a long time. “You really are different,” she said finally. “Talia told me you were, and so did Izzy on the way back from the hunting lodge. I guess I haven’t had enough time to sit with it, but I just realized right here and now that you truly are different than anyone else who’s been in charge. And in the best way. Ellasandra was right about you.”

“I’m not a miracle worker, but I am trying, and I do care.”

“And that is amazing. I really can’t stress how much the previous chieftain didn’t care. He only cared when something was annoying him. We would still have the village and most of our population if you’d been in charge.”

“I’m sorry.”

She sighed softly. “Don’t be. Really. None of this is your fault.”

“I mean I’m sorry it happened.”

“So am I.” She looked out over the landscape again for another moment in silence. “I’m not sure if I’m okay or not,” she said finally.
